A kiva fireplace is an indoor or outdoor fireplace inspired by southwestern pueblo architecture. They tend to be tall, flowing fireplaces and are constructed of an interior firebox surrounded by a plastered metal face frame.
If you use your chiminea in cold wintry weather, be sure to start the fire slowly to avoid a sudden change in temperature that might cause it to crack. If you won’t use your chiminea in the winter, it’s best to cover it or move it to a shed or garage.
(6) Put sand in the bottom of the chiminea before starting a fire. Hot wood coals can cause the clay to crack. Protect the bottom of the chiminea by covering it with at least three inches of sand. You can also use a small metal wood rack to raise the wood if you chiminea is large enough, but it is unnecessary.
Mexican Chimeneas A Sol-y-Yo chimenea is both an outdoor kitchen and fireplace. With our special base you can cook or grill inside of the chimenea. Cooking over an open fire with friends is a very pleasant way to enjoy your garden. Burn wood first and add coals.
Safe Location – A chiminea should not be placed directly against your home, trees or other structure. What is this? Whether it’s a fire pit or a chiminea I like to use the 30 foot rule. Keeping a chiminea 30 feet from any trees, buildings or flammable material is recommended.
There are several differences between chimineas and fire pits when it comes to smoke. Burning the right fuel will limit the amount of smoke produced by either appliance. The dryer and more seasoned the wood, the less smoke it will provide. The smoke produced by a chiminea is often less than that produced by a fire pit.
Do not use a chiminea directly on a wooden deck as it can damage your deck and be a fire risk. Decks are usually made from material that is highly flammable such as wood. Chimineas are extremely hot when lit and can spit out hot embers and sparks.
Aside from barbequing your chimenea can be used for more unusual cooking methods that are exciting and delicious. Clay chimeneas can be used to emulate the tandoor oven, allowing you to cook moist and flavoursome chicken, meat and even fish. It is also possible to cook directly on the coals with use of a steel sheet.
If a fire is hot enough a concrete block can fail. Under extreme heat they can crumble or even explode. But fire pits don’t usually get hot enough to damage a concrete block if you build it correctly. Concrete blocks are made even more fire resistant when they’re installed using refractory mortar.
The beauty of a pizza stone is that it retains a lot of heat, but you have to preheat it before it is ready to turn out beautifully melty, golden-brown, crisp pizzas. With your grill off, place your pizza stone on top of the grill grates.
The chimenea of the past was used indoors for heating and cooking, usually by an open window or in the center of the hut or home with an opening in the roof to allow smoke to escape. With the advent of the modern home, chimeneas are now used outdoors mainly for entertainment in a backyard setting.
They are strong, inexpensive, and BIG = less mortaring than the much smaller bricks. The most common size of cinder blocks in the US is 16x8x8. We highly recommend a height of 40″-44″ for the cooking area, this will make your cinder block base either 4 or 5 blocks high. Use the level when building the walls.
To cure the surface, put the grate inside the chiminea and light a small fire using little bits of kindling wood. Leave it to burn for about an hour then light a bigger, full fire straight away, before things cool down, using larger chunks of wood. Let it burn for an hour then let the chiminea cool down.
Supports for your outdoor pizza oven can be made of concrete, breeze blocks, house bricks, or even old railway sleepers, but they must be strong and level, as the oven is going to be heavy. If you are using bricks or breeze blocks connect them together using cement.
Depending on where you live the vast majority of the wind blows from a westerly direction. Now, this may not be true for every region but if you keep your chiminea facing in an easterly direction (or away from the prevailing winds), it should reduce the amount of smoke that it produces.
