Is it cheaper to use a microwave or electric hob?

Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch, told The Mirror that it is generally much more energy efficient to use a microwave, compared to using an oven.

A microwave oven, designed exclusively for a kitchen countertop, has vents that are built into the back of the microwave. If installed into a cabinet, these vents will be blocked and unable to release steam from the microwave. Talk about a fire hazard for your kitchen.

1. MEASURE FOR STANDARD WALL OVEN CAPACITY. Expect around 2 to 3.5 cubic feet of interior space for a 24-inch-wide single wall oven and around 4 to 5 cubic feet for a 27 or 30-inch-wide single wall oven.

Combination microwaves have fancy features beyond that of a regular solo microwave. Capable of grilling, baking and roasting, some models can replace your oven completely. The most advanced boast specialised functions like steaming and yoghurt making, while others have a grill but not a convection oven.

Standard wall oven sizes typically run 24, 27 or 30 inches wide. Depth and height remain about the same regardless of width. Most single wall ovens are 27 to 29 inches high.

When it comes to quality, ovens usually win out. Microwaves just heat food they don’t do anything else. On the other hand, ovens can do things like caramelize and crisp food, too. That’s because microwaves excite the water in your food and keep the edges from turning brown and tasty.
