While OTG uses traditional heatwaves for heating food, microwave ovens use microwave for heating, which is why they have a faster food preparation and pre-heating time than OTGs. In an OTG, the average heating time is about 14 to 15 minutes. However, modern microwave ovens just take 5 to 6 minutes to preheat.
A pizza or a cake or even garlic bread? Go for the Baking oven – with two heating rods and a fan. That is a pure convection oven. It’s actually a better idea to keep both devices in your kitchen – but do not buy hybrid versions generally called Microwave Convection Oven.
When baking pies and pastries: Convection heat melts fat and creates steam faster, which helps create more lift in pie doughs and pastries like croissants. When making lots of cookies: Convection allows you to bake more than one tray of cookies at a time evenly without the need to rotate them partway through baking.
Set the microwave on the convection mode, set your temperature and this time you also need to fix your time. Remember that when using a convection microwave, baking time gets reduced by 25%. For example, if a cake takes 30mins to bake in an oven, it would take 7.5 mins less in a convection microwave.
A convection oven heats the food from the outside to higher temperatures than a microwave oven. While a microwave oven is great for uniform reheating, cooking and defrosting, a convection microwave is great for grilling, baking, roasting, browning and crisping foods.
The majority of cakes are baked in a regular oven at 180c (350F/Gas Mk 4), on the centre shelf of the oven.
Top/Bottom heating is the most effective setting to use when you are baking or roasting on a single level. The heat is emitted evenly from above and below, making it ideal for baking cakes.
The combi microwave isn’t suitable if you want to bake complicated things. It only has a fan function and a heating element on the top. Cakes and casseroles won’t be cooked through or crispy. Some microwaves have a crisp function, so your dishes will get equally crispy on both sides.
