The storage heater bricks that became a pizza oven Pizza ovens are one of the most popular ways of repurposing storage heater bricks because the ceramic material is excellent at retaining and diffusing heat, helping to create the perfect conditions for that stone-baked Neapolitan margarita or Lazio-style pizza romana.
Fire pits can reach high temperatures, so regular bricks won’t work. Regular bricks will crack at high temperatures and can cause a real accident if used in fire pits. Instead, you are going to use firebricks, also called refractory bricks.
Cinder Block Fire Pit. A simple outdoor fire pit can be constructed out of cinder block. Create a backyard fire pit with little effortor moneyby using cinder blocks. A cinder block fire pit is quick, cheap, and doesn’t require any special DIY skills to make.
Firebricks are blocks of refractory ceramic materials used to line fireplaces, fire boxes and furnaces. They are different from regular masonry bricks because of their ability to withstand temperatures up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cinder blocks are hollow rectangle-shaped structures usually made of concrete and coal cinders which find use in construction sites. Concrete blocks often, on the other hand, are flattened constructs made of steel, wood or cement.
Fire Brick is a high heat tolerant dry-pressed clay brick. The most common use of this product is for fireplace installations, indoor/outdoor brick ovens and outdoor kitchens. Fire Brick can be used during residential or commercial installations and are capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2460 F.
People use many different types of clay and materials for building a clay pizza oven. Probably any fire clay would be fine. We recommend Hawthorn Fire Clay because of it’s workability and affordability.
You may not have spare clay bricks lying around, but you might have concrete blocks. Unfortunately, these aren’t going to cut it. These aren’t fired and so haven’t been hardened. They’re very brittle and would crack easily under the heat.
Mix your concrete in a 1:2:4 ratio (cement/sand/aggregate) and use a spade to fill the mould. Use some scrap wood to level off the concrete and ensure that it’s flat so that your pizza oven is resting on a level base. Create the shape: once your base has dried, you can start creating the shape of your pizza oven.
Natural materials like alumina, silica and kaolinite, can give clay refractory qualities the ability to withstand high heat. When clay is high in alumina, silica and kaolinite, it is called Fire Clay. The first firebricks were simply fire clay dug from the earth, pressed and fired in a kiln.
To put a fire pit on a paver patio, you can either buy a set of pavers specifically designed to build a fire pit, or let your creativity flow and use regular pavers to create your own design. Just make sure to use pavers that are porous and resistant to fire.
Cinder blocks are cheap, light and can withstand high temperatures, so they are very good for making DIY fire pits. Cinder blocks can also be painted with heat resistant paint to create a great looking fire pit for under $100.
Foundation Slab. The Foundation Slab is exactly that the slab on which your oven stand and oven chamber will sit. We recommend a 5 1/2 reinforced concrete slab framed using either inexpensive 2×6 studs, or material you already have that can be cut to size.
