Your range hood size should be a size wider than your cooktop. For hood dimensions, remember the 3-inch rule: your range hood should be three inches wider on each side. For example, if you have electric cooking surfaces that measure 30 inches, your range hood should be 36 inches.
The new hood should be at least as wide as the range or cooktop and preferably 3 inches longer on each side. The most common widths are 30 and 36 inches.
Getting the right size rangehood: Your rangehood should be the same width as your cooktop, to ensure all smoke and fumes are extracted. To make things easy, rangehoods are generally available in the same sizes as common cooktops, e.g. a 60cm wide rangehood is ideal for a 60cm wide cooktop.
Know your hood types Type I hoods are required for equipment that produce smoke or grease-laden fumes. This includes equipment such as fryers, ranges, griddles, convection ovens, tilt skillets and broilers. Type II hoods are used where grease isn’t present to remove steam, vapor and odors.
30 inch range hoods cover 24 and 30 cooktops well, while 36 hoods cover 30 and 36 cooktops. We always recommend that, when possible, our customers buy hoods that are one size larger than their range. For example, if you have a 30 range, a 36 inch range hood is ideal.
What size range hood do I need for a 36 inch cooktop? For a 36 cooktop, purchase at least a 42 indoor hood and a 48 outdoor hood.
A range hood should stick out at a minimum half the length of your kitchen range and usually, it does not expand over its full length. If the upper surface is combustible (for instance, cabinets), add yet another six inches of required vertical space, for a total of 30 inches of clearance between stove and cabinets.
Any ventilation unit is designed to control and disperse smoke, steam, and grease- or oil-related odors out of your kitchen. A range hood collects and transfers these unhealthy vapors to prevent your cooking from fogging up your kitchen.
Range hood dimensions most often measure 24, 30 or 36 in width, but can span anywhere from 24 to 60 wide. It’s best to install a hood that measures the same size as your cooktop to most effectively capture the grease, odors and smoke coming from any burner or element below.
In general, plan on about $200 to $500 depending on the complexity of your installation. This includes the labor cost of installing a new vent hood and does not include parts, adding or modifying ductwork, or electrical work.
In general, a ductless range hood is better than no range hood. Ductless range hoods can be installed on your wall, over a kitchen island, or inside a custom range hood. They are also a cost-effective option for your kitchen, since you don’t have to pay a contractor to install ductwork.
The new hood should be at least as wide as the range or cooktop and preferably 3 inches longer on each side. The most common widths are 30 and 36 inches. For optimal performance, install a hood 20 to 24 inches away from an electric cooktop and 24 to 30 inches from a gas cooktop.
Stainless steel is a popular choice for range hoods because it’s long-lasting, easy to clean, and requires little maintenance. A stainless steel hood will also match many other kitchen appliances, utensils, and stainless steel cookware.
The suggested CFM requirements for cooktops: Regular gas cooktops output 40,000 BTU’s. To calculate your gas stove’s BTU, add the power of each burner and divide the total by 100. So a regular gas system would need a 300 CFM fan.
The standard height for a range hood is between 28 and 36 inches from the cooktop for a gas range and electric range. 28 inches is the minimum height. If the hood is any closer, it may become damaged. Any further than 36 inches and your hood won’t move air away from your cooktop efficiently.
