Built-in and countertop microwaves function only as a microwave, while over-the-range models double as a hood vent for kitchen stoves. Each configuration offers different advantages based on your kitchen and cooking style, and understanding these advantages can help you find the right option for your home.
Small models start as low as $50, and midsized models are typically in the $100 to $300 range. Over-the-range microwaves, or OTRs, can be had for as little as $200, but most we test cost $400 and up. Models designed only to be built into cabinetry or a wall begin at $400 but can cost more than $1,000.
Here is the lowdown. Even a small, compact microwave model can fit dinner plates up to 10-inches in diameter. Medium-sized microwaves can fit plates up to 14-inches in diameter. Large microwaves, however, can fit the biggest dinner plates and typically fit multiple dishes at once.
Countertop microwaves Exterior width ranges from roughly 15 inches for compact microwaves to 24 inches for larger units.
The most common microwaves have capacities between 15 and 32 litres, with a typical family sized model ranging somewhere between 20 and 25 litres.
