Is it worth repairing a GE microwave?

If your microwave is relatively new and the repair costs less than replacing it, the fix is worth it. But are microwaves worth repairing if something major is broken? Probably not. Consider getting a replacement appliance for about $100, which should work for 7 to 10 years.

If an appliance has been subject to a recall, it is likely that the manufacturer offered free repair or replacement in order to get it up to standards. This would be great, but the recall was from years ago. The good news is that recalls don’t expire.

Recall Details Description: This recall involves 30-inch, 24-inch, and 20-inch free-standing and slide-in electric and gas ranges, with seven brand names: GE, GE Profile, Caf, Haier, Hotpoint, Crosley and Conservator.

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, the door switch might be defective or loose. Sometimes arching or overheating of door switches stops microwave from running efficiently. Some microwaves have a seal or gasket around the door. If the seal or gasket is broken, microwave shuts down.

The most common cause for a microwave oven not working at all is a blown main fuse. The microwave main fuse will cut the flow of electricity if too much current passes through it.

As a general rule, recalls have no expiration date. Additionally, they will transfer from one owner to another. If you buy a used car and only later discover an open recall, you are entitled to the repair even though you were not the owner at the time of the recall.

The thermal fuse cuts off power to the microwave if the microwave overheats. To determine if the thermal fuse has blown, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the fuse does not have continuity, replace it. The thermal fuse cannot be resetif the fuse is blown, it must be replaced.

A soft reset is simply turning off the microwave oven to cancel or erase the program you’ve input in the microwave. To do this, you will just simply press on the Off/Clear button. Pressing Off/Clear button and holding it for about 3 seconds will also resolve the Control Locked feature of the microwave.

However, most product recalls have no expiration date and will still apply even if you do not learn about a particular recall until several years after it was issued. It’s a good idea to check periodically to make sure there has not been a safety recall of anything you own.
