Who makes Smeg?

Today, Smeg is run by the third generation of the Bertazzoni family, but it still keeps the memory of its beginnings alive in its Italian name: Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, or the “Guastalla Emilia Enamel Works”.

Most Smeg ovens, and all new electronic models have an automatic pre-heating function which will indicate when it’s time to put the food in the oven via a beep or flashing light on the display. Check with your instruction manual, or contact us, to determine if your oven includes automatic pre-heating.

The oven can also smoke when using the oven or grill function when it is older this is due to fat/grease on the roof and walls of the oven cavity. We sugest that theoven is cleaned regually to reduce this.

Smeg has a reputation as a luxury brand, but it doesn’t always deliver bang for your buck. Its fridges are priced at the very upper end of the market, but they’re made by the same company that produces Beko fridges, which fall at the lower end of the price scale and often don’t perform well in our tests.

Smeg’s pyrolytic ovens feature an automatic cleaning function which means no detergents need to be used in the oven cavity. These ovens are extremely easy to clean.

Smeg is also the name of an Italian manufacturer of upmarket domestic appliances. Vittorio Bertazzoni founded the company in 1948 in the town of Guastalla, Reggio Emilia, Italy. The name is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (“Emilian metallurgical enamel works of Guastalla”).

Michael Mncedi Bucwa (born in 1987), addressed professionally as Mr Smeg is a popular South African businessperson and social media influencer. He is a founding member of the BucwaGroup Company in Pretoria. Many know him and address him as Mr Smeg with thousands of followership on Instagram and Twitter.

Smeg is rated highly for overall satisfaction for ovens and kettles in Canstar Blue’s consumer ratings, although it tends to rate lower on value for money compared to similar premium brands like Miele or De’Longhi.
