Over the range microwaves and Advantium ovens require a minimum 66″ mounting height from the floor to top of the unit. The 66″ from the floor dimension will allow approximately 13″ between the cooktop surface below and the bottom, front of the microwave.
There is no requirement that your Over The Range (OTR) Microwave be vented to the outdoors. All OTR microwave ovens can be set up to either allow the fan to recirculate the air back into the kitchen or be vented to the outdoors.
Unlike countertop models, OTR microwaves are not portable, and they boast a higher price tag: However, they also have built in exhaust fans, which serve as a stove-top ventilation system to eliminate smoke, steam, and cooking odors.
Over-the-Range Microwave Clearance Code and Vent Code According to California codes, no matter the materials from which the microwave and range are made, the microwave must be installed a minimum of 24 inches (or 2 feet) above the stove range, explains the city of Fremont.
1-1 of 1 Answer. The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends that the bottom of the microwave should be no higher than 54 inches above the floor, which would allow for 18 inches of clearance between the microwave and the typical cooktop height of 36 inches. Some manufacturers allow smaller clearances.
You’ll also need a cabinet above the range to hang the microwave in. The cabinet provides support and contains the wiring for the microwave (you might also need this space to hold part of the venting). Plan two hours to hang the microwave, but it might take longer if venting and wiring are required.
Microwave sizes are fairly standardized with most over-the-range microwaves measuring around 30″ wide, 17″ high and 15″ to 18″ deep with the door closed. Built-in microwave sizes also tend to match standard cabinet dimensions.
If your microwave is installed above the range, the manufacturer will recommend that you keep a distance of at least thirteen inches between the base of the microwave and the top of the stove. But some manufacturers might call for this distance to be a minimum of eighteen inches.
Stovetop Using the stove is likely the most obvious choice for reheating without a microwave. To reheat on the stove in a pan or pot add a little water or broth (for soups, stews, beans, pasta sauce, pasta noodles, or rice) and cover with a lid.
In general, countertop microwaves should be at least 2 feet away from the cooktop, and because these models are not designed for over-the-range use, they should never be mounted above a cooktop.
