Why is oven locked?
The oven temperature sensor is a thermistor which changes resistance depending on ambient temperatures. The sensor is connected to the control by electrical wiring. The control reads the resistance changes in the sensor and reacts, opening and closing electrical relays to switch power to the oven elements on and off.
The Gas/Control Lockout feature on a Gas Range or Dual Fuel Range disables the surface burners and oven. The oven control panel is locked so pressing the buttons/pads does not activate the controls. Gas flow is stopped to both the cooktop burners and the oven.
The lock feature shuts down the control pads (buttons) and locks the oven door to avoid unintended use of the oven. The lock feature is preset unlocked, but can be locked. If the oven is currently in use, the controls and oven door cannot be locked.
Look for “Control Lock” on the oven control console and then reset by typically holding the button(s) for 3 seconds.
The three main types of temperature sensors are RTD, Thermocouple, and Thermistor. Most Oven Industries temperature sensors are interchangeable within the specific temperature range for which they are designed meaning in the event one is damaged, it can be swapped out with no need to recalibrate the thermal system.
A Whirlpool oven not heating evenly can also be due to a defective temperature sensor. This component works with the control panel to regulate an oven’s temperature fluctuations. If the temperature sensor is malfunctioning, it won’t accurately communicate these fluctuations, resulting in uneven cooking.
This is an interesting one the customer was getting an F11 error code on the display on the control board. If you’re not already familiar with that error code it means that the control board is sensing a stuck or shorted key on the touch membrane.
This thermal fuse is a manufacturer-approved replacement part for your oven. It is common for the oven to lose power after completing a self-cleaning cycle, and the thermal fuse is often at fault. Replacing the blown fuse is a fairly easy repair, and involved removing the top of the oven to swap out the fuse.
Reset the appliance Power unit down by turning off the circuit breaker(s) for one (1) minute. Power unit up by turning on the circuit breaker(s). Monitor the range or oven for one (1) minute to ensure the error code does not display again. Verify the range or oven operation.
$91.92. Oven temperature sensor kit, 6 inches long. The sensor includes two wire harness adapters for a variety of applications and installation instructions.
A properly working control should have a lit-up display and respond to commands. If the display is not lit, test the hot neutral going to the control for 120 volts. If 120VAC +/- 10% is present at the control, the control should be replaced.
Press the “Off/Clear’ button for three seconds to turn the “Control Locked” child lock off. Reset the cooking program if “Off/Clear” was pressed accidentally. For example, press the “Defrost” button again, and turn the dial to select the defrost time you want again. Press “Start.”

When an oven is in a self-cleaning cycle it turns up to a very high heat temperature. This is to make sure all the extra dirt and food debris burn off. To prevent any injuries during this period, your oven will automatically lock itself so that no one can open it and get exposed to extreme heat.
